Routine Cleanings and Exams

We all know how important it is to see your dentist for regular oral exams and cleanings, and at our office, this no longer feels like an inconvenience. With our friendly chair side manner, our patients often comment on how pleasant they find their visits. Our hygienists provide thorough yet gentle cleanings, and we will take the time to make sure that all of our patients are well educated on the proper way to care for their teeth and gums at home.

We will complete a thorough oral exam. Dr. Matthews will check for areas of decay, the condition of existing restorations, signs of oral habits such as bruxism (teeth grinding), signs of periodontal disease, any oral pathology; from benign lesions, to more serious infections, or evidence of oral cancer. State of the art diagnostic equipment like HD intraoral cameras, all-digital x-rays, and 3-D imaging, give us the ability to safely and effectively diagnose problems, hopefully before they can become more serious.

Children’s Dentistry

Teaching our children at an early age the importance of regular brushing and flossing and bringing them in for routine oral exams, increases the likelihood that they will have healthy gums and teeth for years to come. We recommend a child’s first visit be around age 2 to 3 years old. By then they should have all of their baby teeth and an ideal time to identify potential dental or skeletal developmental problems. It also becomes a “Happy Visit”, a good way to introduce children to our office and learn that they can actually have fun here. One mom said ” you would think they were going to Disney World”

It is important to diagnose congenital issues, such as genetically missing teeth, identifying underdeveloped bone structure, typically presenting as “crowding” Not to get too technical but civilized man’s soft diet, specifically with children, doesn’t provide the necessary stimulus for children’s maxilla and mandible to grow in sync with the child’s development, resulting in crowding, but more importantly, airway issues, causing Obstructive Sleep Apnea. This is often misdiagnosed as ADHD. Dr. Matthews can help recognize some of the differences.

Preventative care such as dental sealants, Fluoride treatments, instructing both the parents and the children the proper way to take care of their teeth. What happens to our children’s oral development will affect there entire life.
